"When One Life Leaves Us, Another Appears."

November, 2009 Stephie and I were having dinner alone in a large house we were living in. Jackson who was 2, was asleep upstairs. I remember a single light being on above the dining table as Stephie said, “There is something missing in our house.” I asked, “Do we need another sofa? Some more art on the walls? What are we missing?” In five words Stephie ended the conversation, “the rest of our family.”

Valentine’s Day, 2010 We were at the cemetery outside of Nashville for Stephie’s father (whom we miss everyday). After the service, Stephie walked off with her mother and handed her a note that read, “When one life leaves us, another appears.”

October 9, 2010 Stephie brought Asher into our world. As parents we always balance thinking we know everything along with admitting we are often not the smartest one in the room. While someone has to be the adult, I always think one of the great joys of parenting is seeing the world through your children’s eyes and thoughts and feelings and dance moves. Asher is a constant source of wonder. I can’t imagine my life before he joined us. And yes, Stepie is always right.

October 9, 2017 Asher came up to our room this morning. Collared shirt. Hair combed just right. A knowing smile. He is 7 years old today. How I love being his daddy.
